Line Marking Removal

Linemarking Solutions provides line marking removal services, successfully removing line marking that’s no longer needed.
We use a range of line marking removal techniques and we would recommend the most effective method for your project based on your needs, the type of line marking that needs to be removed and what you’ll be doing with the space afterwards.

Used for line marking removal in warehouses, factories, parking garages, schools and distribution centres, our line marking removal techniques include:

  • Blacking Out

This is a very cost-effective line marking removal solution in low traffic areas. Our team uses black or grey paint to cover over existing line marking. This isn’t a permanent solution like grinding or blasting, but is often used as a temporary solution. Over time the blackout paint will wear down, just like normal line marking does, and the old lines will start to show through.

  • Surface Grinding

This is exactly as its name describes, removing line marking by grinding it away. This is one of the main techniques used for line removal (especially if new lines will be painted over the top) and can be done indoors or outdoors. This line marking removal technique is usually used on smaller line removal jobs and when the surface finish afterwards is not a key concern. While it is successful in removing the lines completely it usually leaves some scaring on the surface. As our machines include vacuum recovery for any dust and debris there is limited mess.

  • Water Blasting

Using water or a mix of sand and water, our team blasts the surface to remove the existing line marking. This is an effective method and our machine blasts and recovers the water with a machine at the same time, reducing any mess. It’s also chemical free. As the machine is mounted on a large truck there are height restrictions for access.

While this is a permanent form of line marking removal it does leave damage to the surface after treatment. The machines can be adjusted to lower pressures, however these lower pressures can impact the line removal.

  • Shot Blasting

Shot blasting blasts small metal beads onto a concrete surface to chip away at line marking. The machine used is self-contained, and it vacuums up the metal beads as it goes. This line marking removal technique is often used in car parks and warehouses.

Frequently asked questions

Line Marking Removal FAQs

What is line marking removal?

Line marking removal is the process of safely eliminating existing painted or thermoplastic lines from surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, car parks, warehouses, and roads. It is typically done when layouts need to be changed, updated, or fully redesigned.

Why would line markings need to be removed?

Line markings are removed when a space is being reconfigured, upgraded, or repurposed. This includes changes to car park layouts, warehouse traffic flow, safety updates, or correcting incorrect or outdated markings.

What methods are used for line marking removal?

Linemarking Solutions uses several proven methods depending on the surface and project requirements, including blacking out, surface grinding, water blasting, and shot blasting to effectively remove existing markings.

Does line marking removal damage the surface?

The impact depends on the removal method used. Techniques like water blasting are designed to minimise surface damage, while methods such as grinding or shot blasting may leave light surface scarring depending on the condition and type of surface.

Can all types of line markings be removed?

Yes, most types of markings including paint, thermoplastic, symbols, and stencils can be removed. However, the technique used will vary depending on the material, surface type, and how permanent the original marking is.

Can you remove line markings without disrupting business operations?

Yes, line marking removal can often be scheduled after hours or in stages to minimise disruption to businesses, warehouses, schools, and public facilities while ensuring the area remains functional where possible.
